The Oldie of the Year Awards 2018

Continuing the tradition of celebrating the best of the older generation, The Oldie Magazine is pleased to announce their annual awards The Oldie of the Year. The event took place at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand, the awards saw the nation’s favourites applauded in a ceremony over a three-course lunch.

Winners were nominated by a judging panel that included satirist Craig Brown, the actress Maureen Lipman, The Oldie’s TV critic, Roger Lewis, TV producer John Lloyd, journalist Rachel Johnson, Oldie editor Harry Mount and publisher, James Pembroke. The chairman was the wit and wordmeister, Gyles Brandreth, who was also our host.

Oldie gongs were handed out to our Oldie of the Year, Vera Lynn who at 100, has outsold all female artists, written a book about her time entertaining the boys in Burma, and saved the White Cliffs of Dover.

Gyles said: ‘We like to honour a centenarian if we can, and this year we can. She was born in March 1917, you know who it’s going to be…‘ Indeed, our lead award was presented by Gyles to Virginia Lewis-Jones, the daughter of Dame Vera Lynn, who accepted the award on her mother’s behalf. Gyles told the dining room that the Vera Lynn 100 album had been paid for and downloaded more than 100,000 time – 'she has become the oldest recorded artist and the first centenarian in the top three in the charts in the history of recording'. He beautifully summarised: ‘If in the Second World War, Winston Churchill gave us the roar, then this lady, gave us the voice.’

The awards always prove a hit with winners and guests, with previous winners including Mary Berry (2014), Joanna Lumley (2010), Jon Snow (2011) and Sir Roger Bannister (2015) Olivia de Havilland and Jeremy Hutchinson (2016) and Glenda Jackson (2017).
